How is the artificial intelligence MCP server activated and configured in tcpMDT 26?
Summary
MDT26 includes an MCP server (Model Context Protocol) that connects an artificial intelligence agent with the CAD and MDT, so that program functions can be run through natural language. The server is installed automatically together with MDT26, but it does not activate on its own: it has to be configured from the MDT menu. This article explains how to enable it, which AI clients have been tested, its network and security limitations, and where to find the list of available functions and the usage tutorials.
Applies to
MDT 26. The MCP server is part of the MDT26 installation.
Symptoms
You do not know whether the MCP server is available or whether its activation has to be requested.
You have installed or updated to MDT26 and cannot find where to configure the MCP server.
You do not know which AI clients (Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, etc.) you can use.
You need to know whether the server accepts connections from other computers on the local network, and how to configure its IP or port.
You want to know which MDT functions are available through the MCP server.
Cause
This is not an error but a configuration query. The MCP server ships inside the MDT26 installation, but it requires a manual configuration step before an AI client can connect to it.
Solution
Case: activating and configuring the MCP server
Install or update to MDT26. The MCP server is installed automatically with the program; there is no need to request a previous activation.
In MDT26, open the Support > Configure MCP for AI menu and configure the server. You can also launch that same configuration from the "Configure MCP" icon in the Aplitop-MDT26 program group of the Windows start menu, without opening the CAD.
See the getting started guide in the MDT26 installation manual, which sits next to the program installer (
Setup.exe).
Case: choosing the AI client
The tested and recommended MCP clients are:
Claude Desktop
Claude Code
GPT Codex
Case: network scope and security
The MCP server works only on the local computer where the CAD and MDT are installed. It does not accept connections from other computers on the local network.
The listening IP and port cannot be configured: the server does not work over TCP ports but through a named pipe.
The server has no authentication, permission or IP restriction system.
Case: checking the available functions
The implemented functions are grouped in the "Artificial Intelligence — MCP Commands" menu of MDT26.
You can also check them by asking the AI agent directly once it is connected to the MCP server.
There are video tutorials showing examples of use:
Starting the assistant
Exploring the drawing
Creating a surface with MCP
Alignments and profiles with MCP
Earthworks with MCP
Plot management with MCP
If the problem persists
If the AI client cannot connect after configuring the server from Support > Configure MCP for AI, review the getting started guide in the MDT26 installation manual and contact APLITOP technical support, indicating which MCP client you are using.
