Is it possible to change the coordinate system of a project?

Updated on tcpGPS

No. It is not possible to change the coordinate system of a project.

If an error was made when creating the project by selecting the wrong CRS, you can create a new project with the correct coordinate system, and export the points from the project with the incorrect coordinate system to the new project's coordinate system.

The procedure in tcpGPS to transfer points between projects by transforming them to a different coordinate system consists of two main phases: export with transformation and subsequent import into the new destination.

Phase 1: Export with coordinate system change

To export the points by transforming them to a system different from that of the current project, follow these steps:

  1. Access: Go to the Main menu and select the EXPORT option.

  2. Format: Choose the desired output format (for example, TXT, PUN, CSV or DXF).

  3. Modifier configuration: On the export screen, you must enable the modifier "Export points using a different Coordinate System".

  4. CRS Selection: Choose the target Coordinate Reference System (CRS) from the list. It is essential that this system has been previously defined in the application and that it is compatible with the original system so that the resulting data is correct.

  5. File destination: Select whether you want to save the file in the Project Folder (accessible via USB) or in the User Folder (which allows using the Android FILE EXPLORER, SAF).

  6. Execution: Press EXPORT. Upon completion, you can use the Share button to send the file if desired.

Phase 2: Import into the new project

Once you have obtained the file with the transformed coordinates, proceed to incorporate it into the second project:

  1. Preparation: Open the target project or create a New Project ensuring that it has the same coordinate system configured as used in step 4 of the previous phase.

  2. Access: Go to Menu > Import GML > Points.

  3. Selection: Locate and select the previously generated FILE.

  4. Import options: Configure the necessary parameters, such as the Field Order (the standard Format for TXT/PUN is <number> <X> <Y> <Z> <code>) and whether you wish to process the point codes.

  5. Insertion mode: Choose how the points will be integrated into the database:

    • Replace: Deletes the current points and replaces them with those from the file.

    • Insert: Adds the points to the end of the current List, ignoring the original ordinal from the file.

    • Merge: Adds only those points whose number does not already exist in the project.
