How are GIS fields added to a layer?

Updated on tcpGPS Leer en español

To add GIS fields or attributes to a layer in tcpGPS, you must follow these steps within the layer management menu:

  1. Access attribute editing: In the layer manager, SELECT the desired working layer (Point, Line, Polygon) and press the Edit button. This will automatically open the GIS attribute editing menu.

  2. Add new fields: Within this menu, use the Add (+) button to create new attributes that will belong to all elements (points, lines, or polygons) associated with that layer.

  3. Configure the data type: For each field, you can choose from the following available types:

    • Integer: For numbers without decimals.

    • Real: For numbers with decimal format.

    • Text: For any character string.

    • Date: Opens a calendar to select the day in dd/mm/yyyy format.

    • Image: Allows associating photographs taken at the point (they are linked as JPEG files when exporting to SHAPE).

    • List: Displays a preconfigured template to quickly select options without typing.

  4. Save the structure: Once the fields are defined, press the Accept/Save button to confirm the changes to the layer structure.

Important considerations:

  • Retroactive modification: If you modify the field structure of a layer that already has measured objects, the information of those objects will automatically Adjust to the new edited structure.

  • GIS templates: You can use the templates button to speed up the process if you frequently use the same types of fields in different projects.

  • Field use: After configuring the fields, you can enter their values (Key:Value format) during the Survey or later in the point editing screen.

  • Export: All this information is saved in the Drawing Data database and can be exported along with the geometry in Shapefile format, compatible with programs like QGIS.
