MDT 3D viewers do not open or appear empty

Updated on tcpMDT

Summary

When running MDT commands that open 3D graphic viewers (quick profile, superelevations, grade line), the window never appears, comes up empty or closes on its own. The origin is not MDT but the computer's graphics card, which does not meet the requirements of the program's current 3D viewers. The solution is to configure MDT to work with an earlier version of the viewer, compatible with older graphics cards.

Applies to

  • MDT — cases documented on MDT 8 and MDT 9 (the configuration command quoted in one of the tickets belongs to those versions). In MDT 26 the graphics card must be compatible with OpenGL 3.3 or higher, according to the system requirements in the installation manual.

  • CAD platform appearing in the cases: ZWCAD.

Symptoms

  • When running commands that open graphic viewers (quick profile, superelevations, grade line), the window is not shown, comes up empty and then closes, or stops responding when run again.

  • During installation a warning about an incompatible video component may have appeared, typically after changing computer.

Cause

The computer's graphics card does not meet the requirements of the program's current 3D viewers.

Solution

Case: the graphic viewers (quick profile, superelevations, grade line) do not open

If the viewer does not open, comes up empty or closes, and the cause is the graphics card, MDT can be made to work with an earlier version of the viewer, compatible with older cards:

  1. On the CAD command line, run the general configuration command of the module.

  2. Find the variable that controls the graphic viewer version and change its value to 0.

  3. Press Enter and then OK in the dialogue.

  4. Check the viewer again (the quick profile, for instance). An earlier version of the viewer will open, with a different window appearance but fully functional.

This configuration change can also be made by technical support through a remote assistance session.

If the problem persists

  • If the fault continues after these steps, contact APLITOP technical support. In cases of this kind the solution was usually applied through a remote assistance session.

  • When opening the enquiry, state your MDT and CAD versions and attach a screenshot of the error message or of the behaviour (the viewer window, for example); it helps to tell whether the origin is MDT, the CAD or the computer.
