I have modified the surface, can I generate the cross sections automatically?

Updated on tcpMDT Leer en español

Yes, in TcpMDT 25 it is possible to update and generate cross sections automatically after making a modification to the surface.

For this process to take place, the following conditions and steps must be met:

  • Active Project: It is essential to work with an active project file. This allows the software to automatically detect dependencies between the drawn cross sections and the surface from which they were generated.

  • Drawing Configuration: When obtaining or drawing the cross sections, you must check the box "Update after changes to the axis or surface". If this option is active, any change in the surface of the linked drawing will automatically update both the graphical representation in the CAD and the corresponding data file (.TRA), without manual intervention.

  • Update Profiles command: If the update does not occur immediately, you can run the specific Update Profiles command. If the program detects a discrepancy between the drawing surface and the cross-sections file, it will let you select the source of information (the modified surface) to regenerate the cross sections automatically.

  • Cross Section Properties: You can also verify this functionality by selecting a drawn cross section and checking its Properties, where you can activate the automatic update option if it was not done initially.

This system ensures that changes made to the terrain are instantly reflected in all documentation of the related road or segment

If the cross sections do not update: two ways of breaking the link

Even with all of the above in place, there are two situations documented by support in which cross sections that are already drawn stop updating, because the link between the drawing and the model is lost:

  1. Moving the cross sections in the CAD. Once they are drawn, do not change their position in the drawing: moving them breaks the link with the source surface.

  2. Re-triangulating the whole surface. Re-triangulation produces a different surface, and the cross sections already drawn keep pointing at the previous one.

So when the model has to be adjusted and cross sections are already drawn, it is better to do it with specific edits —flipping lines, deleting vertices and the like— rather than with a fresh triangulation.

If the problem persists

  • When opening the query, attach the complete segment —and the associated drawing where relevant— so that support can reproduce the situation.

  • Support can also set up a remote connection through the chat to review the work live.
