How is road setting out performed?

Updated on tcpGPS Leer en español

The road setting out in tcpGPS is an exclusive feature of the Professional version that allows locating points on the ground referenced to the axis of a linear work.

To carry it out, you must follow these fundamental steps:

  1. Setting Out Configuration

Before starting the operation, it is necessary to define which points you wish to locate in the configuration menu:

  • Initial Station: To set out a single specific point.

  • Interval: Allows generating a list of points along the axis or parallel to it based on a constant distance.

  • Critical Sections: Option to automatically include in the setting out list the points that define the geometry of the axis (marked with the prefix [S]).

  1. Selection of setting out mode

There are two main modes depending on the available information:

  • Station and Offset: Points are defined at a perpendicular distance to the axis. Positive values are located to the right and negative values to the left.

  • Station and Code: Allows selecting specific vertices of the associated cross-sections (such as pavement edges or shoulders) for direct location.

  1. Use of the stake out display

Once the operation has started, the application offers two visual guidance modes:

  • Plan View Setting Out: Displays a map with the current position (blue cross) and the target point. It numerically indicates the forward/backward distance and the lateral offset relative to the axis.

  • Elevation Setting Out: Only available if the road has an associated grade line and cross-section. It provides critical information about the current elevation and the up or down movements required to reach the theoretical elevation.

  1. Storage of results

When the desired position is reached, the save button is used. The program will automatically save both the theoretical original point and the actual set out point in the project database for subsequent analysis or export.

Additionally, the Professional version includes a Slope Control tool, which allows checking in real time the state of the terrain relative to the theoretical section designed for the road.
