How do you set out a point?

Updated on tcpGPS

To perform the setting out of a point in tcpGPS, you must access the main menu and select the option Setting Out > Set Out Points. This tool allows you to locate individual points on the ground that already exist in the project database or have been imported.

The steps and available modes are detailed below:

  1. Orientation References

Before starting, you can configure how the application will give you instructions to reach the target:

  • Setting out to the North: Movement instructions (forward, backward, left, right) refer to the cardinal points.

  • Setting out to the movement: Takes as reference the direction in which you are currently moving. It requires movement to create a movement vector, so the application knows in which direction you are traveling.

  • Setting out to the last point: Uses the line connecting your current position with the last point set out as a guide.

  • Setting out to the sun or shadow: Uses the position of the sun at that moment to orient movements.

  1. Visual Aid Modes

The application offers three different interfaces to facilitate reaching the point:

  • Map Mode: Graphically displays all Available Points and your current GPS position. By selecting a point by tapping on it, a guide line appears along with the distance separating you from it.

  • Compass Mode: Indicates the direction towards the point using an orange arrow relative to north. It is ideal for locating points at long distances.

  • Target Mode: Activates automatically when you are close to the target (according to the configured distance). It shows your position relative to the center of a target and precisely indicates the meters you must move on each axis (e.g., "Left 0.50m", "Back 0.20m").

  1. Special Selection Functions

In addition to tapping points on the map, there are buttons on the work bar to:

  • Navigate the list: Move to the previous or next point according to their numbering.

  • Selection by filters: Choose points that share the same code or search for a specific point by typing its number.

  • Geometric setting out: You can calculate and directly set out the intersection of two lines, the vertices of a polyline, or the center of a circle.

  1. Completion and Saving

Once you have reached the exact location of the point, press the Save button (floppy disk icon) to store the set out position in the database. If you need extreme precision, you can perform a long press on the capture button to perform an epoch-based setting out, which will average several readings before saving the Final Result.

Points that have already been set out will be marked on the map with a distinctive symbol to differentiate them from those pending.
