Can GNSS observations be processed with the MDT Topography module?

Updated on tcpMDT Leer en español

No, the Topography Module of MDT does not process GNSS observations, since its main function is oriented toward the processing of data from total stations.

The Topography Module is specifically designed to calculate coordinates and uncertainties of bases and points from direct observations of angles and distances. .

Nature of GNSS data: Unlike total stations, in satellite observations the coordinates are already pre-calculated by the involved GNSS systems (such as the TcpGPS application). Therefore, when importing GNSS points into MDT, the software simply automatically assigns accuracies and uncertainties based on the information provided by the receiver, without needing to process "observations" to obtain the position.

Geodetic Functions: The Topography Module includes a Geodesy section, but its use with GNSS data is limited to the transformation of coordinate reference systems (for example, converting from WGS84 geographic to UTM projected) or the exchange of GPX and KML files, not to calculating position from the satellite signal.

In conclusion, the Topography Module is used to calculate coordinates when total station readings are available, whereas for GNSS, MDT acts mainly as an importer and transformer of coordinates that the instrument has already resolved previously.
