I am starting with the Sections module, how can I perform a basic definition of a section?

Updated on tcpMDT Leer en español

To perform a basic definition of a section in the Sections module of TcpMDT, a structured process is used that allows combining geometric and constructive elements. All this information is stored in files with the extension .SCC.

Below are the main steps for a basic definition:

  1. Start the Definition Command

You must execute the Define – Edit command. The program will ask you to create a new file or select an existing one. If the road is simple (street or conventional highway), you should choose the Urban Section type (Without Median); if it requires a median, you will choose Motorway Section.

  1. Use of Templates (Library)

To facilitate getting started, MDT offers a series of predefined templates or libraries (such as "Sec-urbana", "Sec-autovía con bermas", etc.). When selecting one of these bases, the program automatically assigns Occupation area, pavements, and slopes with default values that you can customize later.

  1. Configuration of Basic Components

A basic typical section consists of four key elements:

  • Platform: This is the set of vectors (lanes, shoulders, sidewalks) that form the road surface. In this tab, you can define the width (DX) and the slope or level difference (DY) of each element. It is vital to mark the pivot point (where the SUPERELEVATIONS rotate) and the grade application point.

  • Pavements: Here, the total thickness of the pavement package (distance between the grade and the subgrade) is defined. You can establish criteria such as having the subgrade parallel to the roadway.

  • Ditches: Using the "Insert" button, you can choose models from the library (V-shaped, trapezoidal, etc.) and apply them depending on whether the terrain is in Cut Slopes or embankment.

  • Cut and Fill Slopes: These define how the section connects with Stockpile Selection. The most basic approach is to assign a fixed slope value (such as 0.5 or 1.0) for each situation.

  1. Assignment by Station (PK)

The definition is made by indicating up to which Kilometer Point (PK) each configuration applies. If the section changes along the axis, new assignment lines are added; the program will automatically Interpolate the values between PKs if necessary.

  1. Help Tools

  • Terrain Simulation: If you do not have a Stockpile Selection loaded, you can activate a simulation button to WATCH how the slopes and ditches would look virtually.

  • Generate Proposed Terrain: This tab allows you to see in real time how the road widens or narrows over the Main Alignment as you modify the data.

  • Symmetry: If the road is identical on both sides, you can define only the left side and use the Symmetry buttons to copy all Occupation area and Properties to the right side instantly.
