What is a Segment?
In the context of TcpMDT, an segment (identified by the file extension .SEG) is an integrating file designed to centralize all the technical information necessary for the definition and design of a linear project (roadways, roads, canals, etc.).
Below are its main characteristics as detailed in the sources:
Function and Purpose
The primary objective of the segment is to prevent the user from having to manually select each of the files that make up a roadway every time a calculation or drawing tool is executed. By working with a single .SEG file, the program has direct access to the entire geometric and construction model of the road.
Linked Components
A segment usually groups the following elements:
Axis (.EJE): Horizontal alignment (mandatory).
Longitudinal (.LON): Longitudinal ground profile associated with the axis (mandatory).
Grade Line (.RAS): Vertical alignment or grade line design.
Sections (.SCC): Definition of the typical cross-section and its assignment along the axis.
Cross-sections (.TRA): Transverse ground profiles.
Superelevations (.PER) and Widening (.SOB): Inclination and widening data on curves.
Blocks (.BLK): Definition of blocks for graphical representation.
Skewed Cross-sections (.TRE): Cuts not perpendicular to the axis.
File Nature
It is essential to highlight that the content of the linked files is copied or embedded into the segment file in binary format. This means that the segment does not simply store "links" to the original files, but integrates them into its internal structure, which greatly facilitates the exchange of projects between users.
Main Utilities
The use of the segment is necessary for advanced tasks such as:
Draw Composite Profiles: Simultaneously represent the ground, grade line, ladder diagram, and diagrams.
Earthwork Calculation: Generate detailed reports of earthwork movement (cut and fill).
Modified Terrain: Generate the final surface of the project after applying the design.
3D Representation and Fly-throughs: Perform realistic and interactive simulations of the designed roadway.
In summary, the segment represents the complete digital model of a roadway within TcpMDT, allowing unified and coherent management of all its geometric and construction parameters.
