How are MDT points represented in the CAD?

Updated on tcpMDT Leer en español

MDT offers two ways to represent points:

  • MDT Points: These are special objects that are faster to process and can include additional attributes such as GPS observation data, hyperlinks, and user data.

  • Blocks with attributes: They have the advantage of being manipulable on computers that do not have MDT installed, although their processing is slower.

Furthermore, points can be represented in both 2D and 3D, depending on the configuration chosen by the user.

The characteristics of each option are detailed below:

  • 2D Representation (Default Option): Points are inserted in the plane at zero height. This mode is the most recommended, as it significantly facilitates the subsequent editing of lines between points and the calculation of surfaces.

  • 3D Representation: Points are drawn in space using their real elevation.

It is important to note that, regardless of how they are graphically displayed in the CAD, each point always internally stores its complete coordinates (X, Y, Z), as well as its name or number, code, and level. This ensures that three-dimensional information is always available for technical calculations, even if the drawing is kept in 2D for operational convenience.

These parameters can be changed from the Point Configuration menu.
