How do I draw a 3D CAD model of a building from a point cloud?
To transform a Point Cloud into an editable three-dimensional model, Tcp PointCloud Editor offers a set of vectorization and advanced modeling tools that allow precise work on the captured reality. The optimized workflow is structured in the following phases:
Cleaning and Filtering of the Point Cloud
Before starting modeling, it is essential to ensure a database free of errors using cleaning techniques:
Removal of isolated points: statistical filters such as SOR (Statistical Outlier Removal) are applied to suppress erroneous returns or environmental noise.
Removal of points outside the area of interest: allows manual cropping, via polygon selection, of Exterior Points outside the building or belonging to levels not relevant to the 3D Model.
Suppression of low-density areas: helps identify and clean regions with insufficient information that could lead to errors in edge tracing.
Classification and Structural Identification
After filtering, the software allows applying AI Classification using the specific Interiors model. This process automatically identifies and labels elements such as walls, floors, ceilings, doors, and windows, allowing the user to isolate these categories to model the Structure without interference from furniture or other Objects.
Definition of Work Planes
To model elements on facades or roofs with metric rigor, the Set Plane Reference command is essential. This utility allows defining drawing planes adjusted to the real geometry of the building, ensuring that all created vector entities are contained exactly in the selected facade or roof plane.
Creation of 3D Entities
The software features a CAD engine with direct drawing and editing tools to generate complex geometry:
Drawing Commands:
draw FACE 3D: generates flat surfaces by designating Two Points: if they are not coplanar, the entity is automatically composed of two triangles.
Draw 3D Polyline: allows creating broken lines in three-dimensional space by designating vertices directly on the point cloud.
Draw Rectangle: creates a closed 3D polyline in the plane defined by the first point and the direction of the Set:
Transformation and Editing Commands:
Extrude Entities: projects polylines in a direction or against a plane to generate new lines or 3D faces, facilitating the creation of volumes from contours.
Raise Polylines: vertically adjusts the vertices of a polyline by assigning them the Difference of the nearest point in the cloud.
Rectify Polylines: automatically adjusts the geometry to the upper or lower edge of a continuous element in the point cloud.
Smooth Polyline and Simplify: optimize the vertex density of the traces to obtain smooth curves or lighter models.
Parallel Polyline: duplicates paths with a specific Offset on the XY and Z axes.
Vertex Management: includes commands to Add, Move and Delete Vertex for manual refinement of the geometry.
Interoperability and Synchronization
The modeling process can be integrated with external tools via the CONNECT TO CAD command, allowing drawing operations in Tcp PointCloud Editor to be immediately reflected in applications such as AutoCAD or BricsCAD through the SYNCHRONISE WITH CAD function. Finally, the vector model can be saved using the Export Drawing command in standard DXF and DWG formats for final delivery.
