How to extend the detach period of a network license?

Updated on

Summary

This article explains how a network license is detached in order to work without access to the license server: how to extend the 24 hours allowed by the automatic detachment and why a license held in a USB protection dongle cannot be detached.

MDT network licenses are managed with Sentinel LDK (Thales) technology, and detaching depends on whether the license is software-based or held in a physical hardware key.

Detaching the license is not the same as moving the dongle

This article deals with detaching from the license server: which licenses allow it and for how long. If what you need is to alternate the same USB dongle between two computers (for example, the office and a field laptop), there is no setting that solves it: the dongle has to be moved physically, as explained in the last case of this article.

Applies to

  • MDT with a network license. The documented case about hardware keys mentions MDT 25; MDT26 is the current version and applies equally to license management.

  • Sentinel LDK (Thales) network licenses, both software-based and held in a physical USB protection dongle.

Symptoms

  • You need to work offline for longer than the 24 hours allowed by the automatic detachment of the license.

  • You have a network license on a USB dongle connected to a server and want to detach it to a computer with no coverage, without moving the dongle physically.

Cause

  • The automatic detachment of the license is limited by default to a maximum period, which is configurable on the license server.

  • Detaching has limitations depending on the license type: in Sentinel LDK (Thales) only software-based licenses can be detached, not a license physically held in a hardware key.

Solution

Case: detaching the network license for more than 24 hours

The automatic detachment allows you to work offline for a maximum of 24 hours. To extend that period:

  1. With certain license types this is possible. To check whether your license allows it, give support the serial number of your license.

  2. On the computer where the license server is installed, go to http://localhost:1947/_int_/config_detach.html.

  3. There you can set the maximum time for which licenses may be detached.

The specific steps the user carries out to detach the license on their own computer are not covered by this documentation: request them from Aplitop technical support in the same enquiry in which you confirm, with the serial number, that your license allows detaching.

Case: detaching a license held in a USB hardware dongle

  1. In Sentinel LDK (Thales), detaching is only allowed for software-based licenses.

  2. It is not possible to detach a network license physically stored in a hardware (USB) key by configuration.

  3. To use the license on a computer with no access to the network or the server, the only alternative is to move the USB dongle physically to that computer.

If the problem persists

  • To check whether your license allows extending the detachment period, you will need to give support your serial number.

  • If the problem continues after configuring the detachment time, contact Aplitop technical support stating the serial number and the period you need.
