When does MDT take up a network license?

Updated on tcpMDT

Summary

This article clarifies when a network license of MDT is considered to be in use: having MDT installed and seeing its menu inside the CAD does not consume a license; the license is requested when the first MDT command is run, and it stays in use until the CAD session is closed.

If what you need is to work offline

This article explains when the license is taken up. If what you need is to detach a license in order to work without access to the server, see How to extend the detach period of a network license?

Applies to

  • MDT with a network license.

  • CAD on which the case was documented: ZWCAD.

  • MDT26 is the current version and applies equally to license management.

  • The source ticket does not state the MDT version or the edition, so what is described refers to the general behaviour of the network license and not to a particular edition.

Symptoms

  • Doubt as to whether opening the CAD with MDT installed, without running any command, already takes up a network license.

  • In an installation with several users, you want to know what actually counts as a license in use.

Cause

  • The MDT menu visible in the CAD does not take up a license by itself: the network license is requested when the first MDT command is run.

Solution

Case: does an open CAD consume a network license without running any command?

  1. The fact that the MDT menu appears inside the CAD (for example ZWCAD) does not consume a license.

  2. The network license is requested at the moment the first MDT command is run.

  3. If it is obtained, the license stays in use until the CAD session is closed.

If the problem persists

  • If the count of licenses in use does not match the above, contact Aplitop technical support stating how many seats you have contracted and how many users are working.
