How to measure distances or areas between points?

Updated on tcpGPS Leer en español

To measure distances or areas between points in tcpGPS, you must use the specific functionality available on the map screen in survey mode. The procedure is as follows:

Accessing the tool

On the survey screen, press the measurement button (the icon representing a ruler). When you do so, the application will ask you what type of measurement you wish to perform: Distance or Area.

  1. Distance Measurement

If you select this option, the process is:

  1. Point selection: The application will ask you to choose the first point on the map and then the second point.

  2. Information obtained: Once selected, the following technical information will appear on the screen:

    • 2D Distance: Calculated without taking into account the height difference.

    • 3D Distance: The actual distance considering the terrain relief.

    • Height difference: The elevation difference between both points.

    • Slope: The inclination between the two selected points.

  3. Area Measurement

If you choose to measure a surface, the operation varies slightly:

  1. Vertex selection: You must successively select the points that define the area on the map.

  2. Importance of order: It is essential to choose the points in consecutive order, as the sequence directly influences the calculation of the resulting polygon.

  3. Information obtained: As points are added, the information updates showing:

    • Number of vertices selected.

    • Total Perimeter of the area.

    • Surface (Area).

    • Minimum and maximum elevation within the chosen points.

Additional considerations

  • Saving data: When performing these measurements, the bottom bar of the screen will display the results; you can press the save button (floppy disk icon) to store this data in a .txt file on the device and share it later.
